Research, development, design and management of new dashboard motifs which feature on all Plus Four and Plus Six models from January 2023.
I was given the brief to find a solution and implement a marking with the word ‘AIRBAG’ on the airbag door panel within the newly design aluminium dashboards on the Plus Line vehicles. This also created an opportunity to add an optional extra motif, the model name logo, on the dashboard.
This task involved a significant amount of research and development into techniques for marking the airbag door panel in a way that:
- Met all the safety requirements for airbags
- Considers the added BOM costs to the vehicles
- Suits the working processes of the paint department at Morgan
- Looks understated, premium and in-line with the Morgan brand values
- Will be long-lasting and cannot be easily damaged through vehicle use
- Applied in-house at Morgan as each dashboard panel is a different colour for every vehicle so cannot be done as a batchÂ
Working closely with suppliers, in-house homologation engineers and Morgan factory craftspeople, I tested a number of different methods for marking the dashboards. This involved research and testing of laser etching, debossing, vinyl stickers, electroform decals, and 3D metal badges.
Ultimately, the most effective solution proved to be a very thin electroformed metal decal placed on top of the painted surface and then lacquered over the top to seal it.
